Adult cautions will not appear on DBS checks after 6 years, unless the offence is one listed here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/262620/List_of_offences_that_will_not_be_filtered_DBS_v2.1.xlsx

These offences are considered to be relevant to safeguarding children and vulnerable persons. If your son feels that his caution genuinely was minor and isn't relevant to safeguarding due to the nature of the incident then perhaps he can take it further?
