| Actually Viv, you could bank £1M and rent somewhere. That would put you on a par with someone who has always rented - except for £1M in the bank. I can't find the reference now but I read somewhere that in the days of rates the tax yield was vastly more than it is now, with a lot of that extra coming from more expensive properties (because rates were directly proportional to property values, whereas council tax is effectively capped). Of course in those Thatcherite days income tax for high earners was at 60% or 75% for investment income. |
