| "It will penalise middle class home owners" Nonsense, it'll tax rich people in a way that they can't get out of with clever tax avoidance schemes. If you live in a £2m house in Chiswick because of ridiculous house price rises boosting your equity you haven't earned it and it isn't a 'nest egg' and you should stop fooling yourself. If you've bought it recently for cash or with a mortgage without massive amounts of equity from previous ladder climbing, you're by definition extremely well off and can put your hand in your pocket, particularly given that the whole recession and wage squeeze we just had appears to have left you miraculously unharmed. Well done, lucky old you. Pay up, the way the rest of us did when VAT went up the other year. It's not a perfect solution to how to tax wealth in a way wealthy people can't evade (Land Value Tax is much more like it) but it starts to redress the balance somewhat.
