Thank you Kathleen. This was the kind of information that I was looking for. Since the structure has been "restored" on many occasions is there not a strong case for it to be reconstructed to a similar design but with modern and/or more long lasting materials.

I can already hear the sharp intakes of breath and the sound of pearls being clutched tightly but to quote in loose translation from Il Gattopardo by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, "If things are to stay the same, something has to change."
