The pension age was originally set just ahead of average life expectancy, so many people did not even live to get it. Now people are living to their 90s with regularity, so spending as long in retirement as in work. This is simply not affordable, and is a major challenge for all western govnts. So far the pensioners have had a pretty good deal in this age of austerity, as all the welfare cuts have fallen on those of working age and young families have been particuarly hard hit. This will have to change. |
