But Stew hundreds of billion pounds must come from somewhere. Just because it is sliced into wafer thin pieces the ham in your sandwich still required the death of a pig. The only place it can come from is the bottom line of the firms doing these transactions. Corporation tax comes from the profits companies make when and if they make profits. This concept would see companies having to pay a levy on the transactions they do whether or not they end up making any money or not. If you want to punish these institutions (as seems to be part of the motivation for this idea) why not simply increase the rate of corporation tax? |
