Even if your parents would not contribute then, provided you had an offer of a place, after a year in employment you could get a grant in your own right (which effectively means 100%). What I would agree with is students were bright and university was for the elite. Given we are producing arguably less geniuses each year perhaps it should still be; and, then the "deal" could be reconstituted- the taxpayer would pay for (just about) everything in return for truly competent high rate tax payers in the making. The present system fails to bring home the bacon. |
