Carrie, the task of leaders is to be one step ahead of their supporters and lead forward. If they go too far ahead they lose contact with their roots. I have no doubt that the NUS leadership is "careerist" and may put their own futures ahead of their members' immediate interests. However, if their opponents react to them in what socialists call an "ultra-left" way, the only winners will be the people they are campaigning against. It is obscene that some older people are not sympathetic to the fact that today's youth are not receiving the same free higher education received by their parents and grandparents. However, the politicians in office calculate that if they put the burden of budget cuts on younger people (student fees, reduced retirement benefits, higher National Insurance contributions etc.) this will reduce the risk of them being booted out by the electorate at the next election. This is because a much higher proportion of older voters actually vote than younger people, and they are cynical b***ards. I note that Barclays has set aside £1.6 billion for bankers' bonuses, despite the huge bailout they received from government. This demonstrates clearly that if young people and their elders could agree about sharing our reasonable share of the current financial burden there is still plenty money out there among the rich to cover the bulk of our collective burden. Of course, millionaires have never believed that they should contribute if they can avoid it. |
