Many children did not go to University previously because it was not encouraged. There was the expectation in secondary schools that you left school at a young age and took up work whether in an office or a shop or factory (which was quite the norm for alot of people). If your parents did not have the money you did not go to Uni - no ifs or buts - except in certain circumstances where the student might have help because they were exceptionally gifted. Even when Uni was free the students needed to be supported and if this could not be afforded they often did not go. |
