I had a fascinating discussion the other night with a elderly, learned and turbanned Sikh gentlemen about Enoch Powell. My Sikh acquaintance was very well informed about Mr Powell and made very complimentary remarks about him which, I must admit, came as some surprise to me. He didn't consider Powell to be a racist and greatly valued Powell's knowledge and experience of India and Africa. On the other hand, the Sikh gentleman was not at all complimentary about Mahatama Gandhi whom he blamed for the partition of India, the consequent massacres, the subsequent wars and the problems of Pakistan and Kashmir. He took the view that the Attlee Labour Government gave independence to Indian prematurely and without fully understanding the consequences or making proper preparations. The third member of our little discussion was a Muslim born in Pakistan who was too young to know who Enoch Powell was. Enoch Powell is a historical figure - no more. He has very little influence on British politics today. |
