Well Robin, since they are (sadly) not even in the same league as Man Ure anymore, I think you are absolutely right to predict that they will finish further down. As to looking at track records, I think that is one of a range of things you can look at when predicting what parties will do when they get into power (I think though that you ALSO need to factor in the degree to which they subsequently break with manifesto promises). But what interests me about this is that whilst you seem content to cite previous Tory behaviour as a reliable indicator of future Tory behaviour, you seem to discard the same methodology when applied to New Labour. For example, when we debated ID cards recently, you based your argument on a future scenario wherein Labour AND the Conservatives would BOTH reverse their positions. Despite the fact that if one looks at, 'track records' it was the Conservatives who last actually abolished ID cards (in 1952). That seems contradictory, if you don't mind my saying. |
