No - it's Eric Hayman who wrote Up Africa '74 and Black Dragon Yellow Dragon, and a considerable amount of verse, including this: CHISWICK THOUGHTS. The watcher by the window, the thinker by the pane, the figure near the curtain, the sound of summer rain. The wishing and the wanting, the yearning of the heart, the distance found in sorrow, the depth of minds apart. The coming of blind reason, and looking for the truth, for seeking now the answer that came to gleaning Ruth: the smallest has its value, the mickle has its worth. One footstep on a journey can lead around this Earth. No matter what the anguish, no matter what the cause, life has its better moments, as peace will follow wars. Until the next irruption accept the gift of love. Go out with eyes full open, for eagle and for dove. Look boldly to the future and take the proffered hand. Greet autumn as though springtime - walk proud upon this land. © Eric C. Hayman, 6 May 1992. Chiswick, London. Spot the Old Testament reference. |
