| This new proposal to put stamp duty on the sale price of a house and NOT the purchase price is clearly aimed at the older middle class. When the kids have left home and the house seems too big our thoughts often turn to downsizing, perhaps leaving London and helping the sprogs onto the property ladder with a cash injection. If stamp duty is applied to the house being sold (higher value) then this could very well cause people to rethink, stay where they are, not be able to help their children out, and lead to a stagnant property market. |
