I said this when the measures were announced but it is worth saying again: Nick as someone who is obviously in favour of the proposals how do you suggest someone who wishes to do a weekly shop for a family of 4 at the butchers, grocers, deli & fishmongers on TGT do it on a bike? It will not work. Some people may be close enough to an E3 bus stop that they can switch to going by bus (a good thing) but most people in Chiswick are not on the E3 bus route. They will abandon TGT as a shopping destination and take their cars to Sainsbury's or Tesco's. I have seen this before. The town I grew up in had a similar "brainwave" (mostly to raise revenue) to restrict parking in the town centre 20 years ago. It took less than a month to kill the Town Centre, people simple drove to the next town to do their shopping. The council were forced to reverse the policy inside 3 months but it still took the Town Centre 10 years and a £10+m redevelopment to recover. As a regular cyclist, I am very much in favour of promoting better cycling. But killing parking at local shops is the wrong way. This will probably kill TGT as a shopping destination before Xmas. |
