Although the extra housing is a positive let's not be taken in by TfL double speak. 'Affordable' is not the same as social housing and most affordable units in this development will in fact be discounted housing for relatively well-off people. Also it is a nonsense to talk about a development being car free. They may not be providing residents parking but that has just allowed them to increase the density of the development. Many residents will get around this in various ways as they do in all similar developments but most vehicle journeys caused by population increase are not caused by resident owned cars anyway. Deliveries, services and visitors generate a bigger proportion so the 2,000 or so extra people who move into these units will generate a lot of extra traffic. This is unavoidable and you can't not build housing because of it but the problem for this site is that access is through one road across which two level crossings go and more trains are already planned to use those lines. If only TfL had told TfL that his is what is happening. The likelihood is that this is an opening gambit by TfL who probably thing they can actually get away with towers that are 16-18 storeys high but can present themselves as having listened to residents when they scale down their initial plans. |
