Chiswick is not Bogota, Auckland, Toronto nor Seattle. It is a small neighborhood already disconnected from the masses closer to the city center. The comparison is untenable. Will an event like this make it a destination? No. To your point, it will be a community event. If it were to grow and compete with Notting Hill it would need to be well executed, promoted and repeated in order to grow to that standard. Otherwise it will always be a day for Chiswick and that alone. Deliveries - businesses might (repeat might) be able to sort that out. But residents would have to give up any deliveries as well. Easy logistics? Nope. Headaches? Yup. So ask yourself if you'd be willing to put up with the inconvenience of that. Residents who only have access to their homes via CHR would be trapped for the day. Simple as that. Buses are easily re-routed as they are on King Street. They would need to cross CHR to allow for modified service, e.g., at Acton Lane, maybe Devonshire and TGT or other temporary diversions. Maybe Chiswick Lane is the eastern border of said event though I'm loath to promote something for CHR and then forget about those on the outer reaches. To me it should go the entire length from Goldhawk to the circular. If it's about the community, you need to include all businesses within. It should be on a Sunday so we can see the effects of parking removed per the CS9 proposal. Pop-ups vs rate payers. Always a riddle. I've been on both sides of that equation. From experience trade is reduced when there is a local event like the Devonshire Street party, the Bedford Park Society Green Days and any fun fair. The draw is the event and people go to that destination. They don't tend to meander. But that's only 10 years experience and a local baker talking. A baker with an advanced degree in architecture and urban planning who has worked with the architects of the new US Embassy and your very own Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace. But hey, now I'm just a tradesmen so what do I know? |
