Tony, you seem to have misunderstood the nature of the problem. I closing the road won't stop people driving down to Chiswick High Road to shop. They can just park north or south of the High Road depending on where the approach from. The problem is all the through traffic that uses the road. The capacity of the roads that will be the diversion route to cope is inadequate. Even if a substantial proportion avoids the area it won't take much to clog them up particularly if the buses are diverted. South Parade finds it hard enough to cope with two buses coming in opposite directions at the moment. If this was happening ten time as often the road would quickly become impassable and cars would look to get away through other local residential roads. Even if you don't divert buses it wouldn't take that much extra traffic to clog things up. Even if the whole thing was well publicised, which experience has shown us it won't be, there will still be too many drivers using the diversion for chaos not to follow. This section of road gets clogged up if Fishers Lane is closed for any reason and that would just be causing a tiny proportion of the extra traffic that would result from closing Chiswick High Road. |
