It's only Monday and here is what we learned today: Parliament voted down an amendment to stay in the customs union even though that is the only easy way to protect the Good Friday Agreement. The EU said our banks will lose passporting rights. Like it or not we get a lot of tax revenue from the banks. Some of that tax revenue will now go to funding public services abroad. The European Medicines Agency and European Banking Authority are leaving the UK. In April David Davis said their location would be a matter of negotiation. Well now around 1000 jobs will go. Add in the impact on families, the loss of international influence and business done by their being based in the UK. Carole Cadwalla and Jolyon Maugham have done some digging and now the Electoral Commission is going to investigate Vote Leave and others for breach of the electoral rules. The maximum fine is about 20k which seems low for fraudulent behaviour, and positively a bargain for (potentially) rigging a referendum. Meanwhile David Davis wants to travel by RAF plane because the Eurostar has the word Euro in it or something. Oh and for the first time since 1946 the UK will not have a judge at the UN international court of justice - but that has nothing to do with Brexit. But at least the Government admitted, sorry apologised, in the House of Lords for misleadingly saying that the Supreme Court ruled on whether article 50 notice is revocable. All in all a quiet start to the week in the independent republic of Brexitlandia. |
