Unreconstructed Doris is a dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess published in 1962. Set in a near future Chiswick society that has a subculture of extreme middle aged female nagging, the novella has an angry protagonist, Doris 1, who narrates her violent mood swings. The book is partially written in an Acton-influenced argot called "Petspeak". Doris's friends ("trolls") are: Doris 2, a slow-witted bruiser who is the gang's muscle; Doris 3, a gossip, and Doris 4, who mostly compiles dossiers on men and organises complaints to nanny. Characterized as a misandrist and a hardened middle-aged delinquent, Doris 1 also displays stupidity, slow wit, and a predilection for anthropomorphism; she is particularly fond of Beethoven, referred to as "Lovely Ludwig Van". |
