When I hunted with the RMA Sandhurst at Barossa, they'd use one of their top distance runners to lay a scent trail (aniseed I think) we all had a great time hounds, horses and riders - that's what hunts do now I believe, lay a scent trail. What needs to be taken out of any type of hunting is the relentless pursuit of an animal by a pack of dogs and any 'kill' should be quick, clean and humane. Clearly foxes and vermin are a major nuisance to farmers, as are badgers due to the TB we are told they carry, and they need to be dealt with, but humanely. It is a problem and a wide ranging one with no easy or simple solutions, and one were centuries old traditions meet head on with modern beliefs and values, and David Cameron's 'middle way' concept could be the way forward. |
