As a lifelong Labour supporter, who voted for Rupa Huq, this response is why we have traditionally struggled to do well in rural and farming communities. Rupa Huq's response is waffle, the only proposal is "... enhanced measures to address herd to herd transmission, including compulsory post-movement testing..." This is already in place. The restrictions are expensive for farmers and result in loss of trade. Government inaction will accelerate the end of dairy farming in the UK. The recent badger cull was flawed because of the restrictions forced upon it. Ireland have been very successful halving their incidence of Bovine TB by allowing extensive badger culling in the local area around any herd with positive infection. Badgers still thrive in Ireland...but, more importantly, so does their diary farming industry. Possibly those supporters of doing nothing and waiting for this mystical "...alternative strategy..." will be happy buying all their milk, butter, cream etc from our more progressive European partners. |
