John, it just occurred to me that whenever I am in Ireland (the South - I have family over there and visit from time to time), I notice that most dogs are muzzled in public (pubs, where I spend much of my time there). I just checked and Irish law states that the following breeds MUST be muzzled by law (The Control of Dogs Regulations 1998) whenever in public places: (and this includes any cross breed or other strains of these types) American Pit Bull Terrier English Bull Terrier Staffordshire Bull Terrier Bull Mastiff Dobermann Pinscher German Shepherd (Alsatian) Rhodesian Ridgeback Rottweiler Japanese Akita Japanese Tosa Bandog I looked on this Irish forum, and note the following comments: http://www.sceala.com/phpBB2/irish-forums-25508.html "Any responsible and educated dog owner would muzzle their dogs in public at all times" "In a ideal Ireland, all dogs should be muzzled when in public." "Even for those ignorant dog owners who think they know best and would never muzzle their dogs. The fact is... it will help prevent a dog from harm. For your dogs own health and safety, you should muzzle them." "Whatever the breed of dog muzzle them, whenever you go out for a walk or when your dog is not in a secure and private area." And the law makes some sensible exemptions: Police (Gardaí) dogs when "on duty". (makes sense!) Airport police dogs Bona Fide rescue dogs on a rescue operation Guide dogs. So maybe it's not a totally insane idea after all. |
