I lived in Leicestershire for a few years back in the mid nineties. I lived out in the Langtons, a lovely old traditional farming area close to Market Harborough. At certain times of the year, the Quorn hunt would be out very early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, across the fences around Tur Langton. 300 years of history right there, racing across in front of you. The lanes used to be packed with cars by 8am, people standing on the road looking down into the valley and watching the hunt tear across the countryside. On an early misty morning it was quite the most magnificent sight and sound. The dogs were fantastic, and occasionally one or two of them could be seen in the Fox and Goose, our local pub. I wonder what became of them. And what happened to the kennelmen, the whips, and all those other guys sitting enjoying a pint. I wonder if they still have the price of a beer? Whatever the rights and wrongs of chasing vermin across the countryside, we have certainly lost a magnificent and traditional spectacle. I will not be too upset if the ban is repealed, as seems likely to happen within 12 months. I'm not terribly bothered about foxes. If I could get rid of the mangy vermin that spread our bin bags over the road and keep us awake at night, I would do it in a heart beat. |
