I hate to drag Sam back from the North West Frontier here, but has he got a concrete plan for restoring trust in the UK? Perhaps a vow not to support policies with zero evidence and a bit more public faith in institutions rather than amateurs would help? The antivax movement is a classic example of the low trust society, where public institutions (such as state vaccination programmes) are allowed to be denigrated (by the press as much as anything else, with no attempt at balance or accuracy - MMR is a classic of the type but there are others, such as the endless attacks on state schools) to the point where actual charlatans seem plausible and end up doing a large amount of damage. This is, I suggest, not a good sign for the future and needs addressing. |
