I had chicken pox at nineteen despite being exposed to it many many times in childhood. Not Pleasant. The Anti-vaccine movement is a classic example of first world problems. Paradoxically, vaccines have become a victim of their own success. Because most childhood diseases have either been effectively wiped out or radically reduced an entire industry has evolved looking for problems where none exist. Go to developing countries which still have sky high infant mortality rates and watch them queuing around the proverbial block to get vaccinated. I must say though, I do find the idea of schools not allowing children in who don't have up to date vaccinations, it's not quite as coercive as forcing people to vaccinate, but it is sending a very clear message: "you can choose not to vaccinate your child, we can chose to make a very clear statement that you're wrong." |
