Yes measles can be dreadful but chicken pox isn't much fun either. I was not considered well enough to be immunised against anything other than polio as a child and therefore had measles, mumps, German measles and whooping cough, luckily without lasting effects. I haven't however had chicken pox. Many adults are not made pretty ill from it but often then get a hefty slug from shingles before they are fully recovered. They will then have to live with the possibility of the virus flaring up at any other point in their lives. We have become complacent about these so-called childhood diseases and paranoid about every scare, however poorly rooted in scientific fact. I am not for instance able to take my dog to training class without proof of an up to date vaccination record so why are children allowed in nurseries and schools without the same?
