interesting that most of the comments so far have concerned 2 topics: The relative ease of travel from W4 to LHR to GTW, and the preferences of Airlines for a superhub.

regarding the former, a couple of comments:
1. Agreed the the Gatwick express is a joke. I would expect that the transport routes would be greatly enhanced though.
2. I find it odd that people see this as an either/or. LHR will still be bigger by far with as many flights as we have today. I wouldn't envisage having to use LGW much more than  I already do.
3. In any case it's not just about Chiswick. Access to the city and many parts of London could be better served by LGW

Regarding the Airlines preferences. BA are the most vocal because they have a massive investment in T5. Of course airlines would prefer a single superhub, but frankly, as also pointed out elsewhere, we cannot compete with the likes of Frankfurt and Dubai here in the south east. Boris Island might have had a chance, but how long would that take? LGW would have a better chance long term to expand further, whereas LHR really is at it's limit.
