That really depends on you flight and which part of London.

Arriving with BA to T5 at Heathrow it is very easy to get around and you will be on the Picadilly line in no time.

Other terminals are a bit rubbish, I agree, but then if you are the wrong side of the bridge at Gatwick there is a real slog to get out.

As far as cheaper? Gatwick to Chiswick is around £13 on public transport. Heathrow to Chiswick on the Picadilly Line is about £3.
