Rail connections to Heathrow should be improving in the future.  Crossrail will be stopping there, Gunnersbury should have a link to Crossrail assuming the interchange at Old Oak Common is built and Piccadilly lines will stop all day at Turnham Green after the resignalling has finished and new Piccadilly line trains are in service. So that will be about 2025 then ;)

There has been lots of talk about Heathrow needing to expand to be a hub reaching the growing cities of Asia but I think Heathrow has already lost that battle to the Gulf.  Airlines will just fly where it is most profitable for them to fly anyway.  I think Virgin has recently cancelled a service to India and put on more flights to N America instead,
