Gatwick to London by train is a nightmare trap for the unwary, there are at least ten different fares and if you get on the wrong train you face a fine - buy the wrong ticket and the relevant trains run every half an hour. What a way to greet foreign travellers to the UK. And anyway - how much spare capacity is there on the rail line between Gatwick and Victoria/London Bridge?.

Then there is the problem that all the airlines want to be at the same airport because they think (even if you don't agree) that it is important to be able to connect with other airlines flights. So it may be easier to build a new runway at LGW than it is to get anyone to actually use it.

Maybe there won't be the demand at LHR either soon - add Dubai's growth and enthusiasm to a possible UK exit from the EU and maybe LHR could just close a runway instead.
