What a bunch of sore losers there are out there! If ex Cllrs John Connelly and Vanessa Smith were really worried about budget cuts, they'd turn their criticism to the Coalition Government. The proverb about motes and beams comes to mind. 48 of the 60 Councillors are expected to do 20 to 30 hours a week in exchange for a basic allowance of £9,276. That is between £6 and £9 per hour. Many do more hours. No doubt a few are lazy or negligent but most are hard-working public servants. Most institutions and companies mark their anniversaries so I don't begrudge them the odd beano. The full list of allowances is here: http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/members_allowances_scheme_feb14.pdf BTW the budget of Hounslow Council 2013-14 was £189.3 million see http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/statement_accounts_2013_14.pdf |
