Just reading an article in the Times about the introduction of dog DNA registration, being considered alongside the compulsory microchipping of all dogs which begins in April 2016. A US company called Pooprints has introduced compulsory dog DNA registration in many places in the US, Canada, Israel, and Singapore. The result has been an almost total absence of dog fouling in public places as dog owners now know that they will be identified and fined. In Tennesse, local dog wardens have not had to issue a single fine for fouling since DNA registration, as owners know they will not get away with it and so now pick up after their dogs. A biotech company in Wales has the license for Pooprints in the UK is pushing for DNA registration to be introduced in 2016 under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing act. Registration would cost £30, and would be done at the same time as the compulsory microchipping. The company has so far received expressions of interest from 15 local councils. Let's hope it gets implemented. How nice would it be for our local parks and footpaths to become free of dog fouling. |
