Excellent Philippa. We haven't even had a bin in the kitchen, for years. A family forum decided that Hounslows recycling is so comprehensive that there was hardly anything to put in it and even visitors can't just put it in the bin if there isn't one. We have 3 jute carrier bags. One for paper, one for plastics and one for green box stuff, a small pedal bin for home composter stuff and a caddy for other food waste. A small container for small pieces of metal and a carrier bag on a hook behind a door for residual. It took 6 days for us all to get used to it and the children have learnt to be responsible with valuable resources. We don't use the word "rubbish"! The kitchen is small but it works well and it is easily carried outside to the containers for collection at which point if anyone has absentmindedly put something in the wrong one it is easily transferred. It doesn't take us any longer to put it in the right place. We just have to check whether it's the plastics or garden waste this week! |
