Even without a second or third phase, the proposed new 7-8 storey blocks would be clearly visible from all parts of the Green and change the character of the conservation area. it is true nearly all the leaves have gone and will not reappear until maybe May? So the developer's literature which cleverly hid every image behind a veil of leaves was clearly misleading. The new development and towers would also be clearly visible at night when lights are on for most seasons of the year. I would say, given the pressure of council and indeed supermarket revenues at present, that development of the prime real estate that is now Sainsburys and the car park is inevitable. The last poster clearly noted that this could change the character of central Chiswick forever. If the new 7-8 storey blocks are allowed then I suspect this will be the minimum for this massive new development. There has been plenty of new build along the western end of the High road that is more sympathetic to and in keeping with the height of existing buildings. But with these and the new blocks up Acton Lane by the tube there will be growing pressure on our open spaces, as most of these have no open or amenity space for their residents. This is also set to be the case with Empire house. Also, its not just Chiswick NIMBYs. If you look at the Brentford site local groups are upset at the huge development proposed there for the central riverside, where community feedback has also been ignored. Councilor Cadbury spoke very eloquently at the first CHRAG meeting of her appreciation of the character and feel of Chiswick and the need to preserve this. As quite likely our next MP I wonder what her thoughts on this development are. It surprises me that so many posters seem so happy to accept the shiny brochures and sales pitches of these developers. They are out to maximise their profits with little if any regard for the built environment that they will leave for the next 100 years. |
