You can obtain information about the drugs used, general policies and protocols by speaking to the practice manager or senior nurse, for which you will not be charged. If you make an appointment to speak to a vet, understandably, you will be charged for their time. Yes vets can put their own mark up on drugs but there are other factors to consider including economies of scale. Single parctices obviously do not have the same buying power as small groups and small groups similarly do not have the clout of large chains. Online companies have huge buying power because they can buy in large quantities and obtain discounts. Costs are evened out across the practice. Most vets apply huge discounts on neutering and vaccinations and make it up elsewhere, often on food and toys. It is always distressing when one's pet becomes ill at any time and especially out of hours and, unfortunately, because most London vets do not offer in-house emergency cover, it can be very expensive. It is often not possible to obtain an estimate or a breakdown due to the nature of the emergency. The only answer is to pay for insurance if you can afford it and bite the bullet if you can't. At least in London we are able to get animals to an emergency vet out of hours comparatively quickly and mostly, the standard of care wil be very high. |
