Thumbing through my trusty copy of British Electoral Facts, the Conservatives would have won England in Feb '74 with 268 out of 516 seats, and Oct '74 would have seen no majority (L 255, C 253, L 8 - 516 seats). Subsequent elections would have seen no difference bar 2010 when the Conservatives had a majority in England. Going further back, Feb 1950 saw 253/506 for the Conservatives and 251 for Labour and 2 for the Liberals. In 1964, the Conservatives won England (262/511) to Labour's 246 and the Liberal's three. So, a little more complex (most of these analyses look at UK ex-Scotland, rather than England alone) but hardly a 60 year Tory one party state. |
