"Are you including M.Ps from Northern Ireland and Wales in this too? And what about M.Ps from London voting on issues that only affect the north of the country or any other region, and vice versa, or any combination of all of these possibilities?" Spot the Labour smoke screen. You can fool all of the people some of the time ..... Proposals for preventing MPs representing Scottish constituencies at Westminster from voting on English only matters have been in at least the last two Conservative Party Election Manifestos and is long overdue. Is this complicated - of course not. Will it wreck the constitution - of course not. It would simply oblige any future government not to introduce legislation, for matters affecting England alone, that is not supported by a majority of English MPs i.e. representative democracy as it is normally understood. Of course this includes MP's from Wales and Ulster - they have their own Education Systems and National Health Services dealt with by their own devolved assemblies. Why ask such a dumb question? The proposals for regional devolution in England were decisively rejected in a referendum in the NE. The turn out from memory was pathetically low. Should this be looked at again? After the Scottish Referendum why not? It will be an expensive exercise but why not "run the flag up the flagpole and see who salutes it"? |
