Personally I'd be sorry to see the Scots go but if I was a Scottish voter I'd probably vote yes. Whatever we think of currency union, the likelihood is that: a) Scotland will wish to be in the EU b) They will have to apply as a new member. Whilst it's possible rUK or Spain would object, I think tht view is unlikely to prevail. c) As a new member they are very likely to be obliged to have a plan to join both the Euro and Schengen (open borders) d) Therefore any sterling-based currency arrangement is likely to be short term. And - unless there's an inconceivable change of heart by rUK - there will have to be a controlled border: otherwise all those chappies who currently like the back of Fiat Pandas will merely board a boat to Glasgow and sashay across into England. |
