The Republic of Ireland had its currency pegged to the pound for about 50 years after independence. I was very young at the time but I can remember Irish and UK currency being accepted as equivalent on both sides of the border although Irish coinage and notes wouldn't have been accepted in GB. I can't remember the reasons why the punt broke away from sterling and went free floating. |
