The vast majority of secondary schools, of all types, are obliged primarily to have an academically comprehensive intake. Other factors will then come into play. As Vanessa, I think, pointed out quite rightly. It would be entirely wrong to lazily assume that working class children lack academic ability or that middle class children are necessarily able. The same comments might also be applied to behaviour. Another factor that will influence admissions is that schools are obliged to take pupils with statements of special educational needs whose parents apply to them. As a cynic once remarked, 'there are no thick middle class children, just ones with SEN statements'. |
