Vanessa's views on education are often formed by her prejudices but in this case I think she has raised an important point. Free schools should not be socially selective. However, the case is not proven that they actually are by the figures presented. Admissions to free schools may have a smaller proportion of children on free school meals but this may not be due to selection. If the proportion of children admitted is consistent with that for applications then there is little that the school can do. A lower proportion of children on free school meals applying may be down to LEA policy. If looked after children and the children of those parents who accept the first school place allocated by the LEA are not put forward for free schools then there will be a social bias but that wouldn't be the school's fault. |
