"I have an issue with people using years-old experiences to comment on current trends," Thomas, I'm sorry you have an 'issue' with people basing their views on their own experience, but I was a little irritated with derogatory comments made on the basis of no experience against the actual experiences of another person. I did not comment on 'current trends', I simply pointed out that the disruptive behaviour of certain types of pupils does not of itself indicate that the teacher is incompetent, as John was suggesting. Such pupils have always existed in the classroom, and unless some miracle has occurred in the past few years, I would assume that they continue to exist, as the experience of Trudie's niece would seem to bear out. I did not make a point about 'good' or 'bad' schools, nor did I make a plea for any particular type of school. I agree that parents are often short of information when trying to decide where to send their children, but, like it or not, schools get a reputation of one sort or another and most parents will be aware of that when making their choice. As for the idea that even disruptive pupils have to go somewhere, this is, of course, absolutely true, but many parents will try to ensure, however ineffectually, that that 'somewhere' it's not in the same classroom as their own children. Or do you perhaps think that parents should not be allowed to make value-judgments on where they send their children to school? |
