"It's born of snobbery, pure and simple." Rubbish - the reason parents don't want their children to go to SOME state schools is because discipline and manners are totally lacking. Teachers spend vast amounts of time trying to establish order in the classroom before they can even start actually teaching. My niece gave up after several years at a big comphrensive school attempting to teach French and German to totally unwilling and disinterested pupils - the handful who wanted to learn were drowned out by the majority who didn't! The final straws involved her being accused of stealing because she confiscated a handful of mobile phones; blamed for the fact that a boy produced a gun and shoved it into the ribs of another lad as they were leaving her classroom; blamed because an out of control girl repeatedly bashed her head on the window, eventually breaking it and cutting herself! The Head was ineffective and also unable to establish law and order and was in awe of the loud-mouthed and aggressive parents of the most disruptive children. There were as many of these as there were reasonable, concerned parents of pupils who did wish to get an education but were thwarted by the yobbo element. Therefore, if as a parent you have a choice, you're not going to choose a school like that are you? |
