"Trudie, your niece sounds like one of the incompetent teachers who gave schools a bad name in the past." I find this a breathtakingly ill-informed and condescending remark. Have you ever taught anywhere at all, John? I can't imagine so, because if you had, you would not be so quick to judge and sneer at Trudie's niece's all-too-common experiences in the classroom. I taught in London's schools for many years, and believe me, some children are equal-opportunities disruptors - they don't distinguish between good or bad teachers, male or female, young or old. They are simply a pain in the neck to anybody unfortunate enough to stand in front of them. This is not a plea for any particular type of school, but any parent who is concerned about their children's progress will try to ensure that they go to a school which contains a minimum of the types of pupils that Trudie's niece describes. The fact that she has encountered them does not make her sound like an 'incompetent teacher', to use your objectionable phrase, it simply makes her sound like an experienced teacher. |
