I think the exchanges between Adam and Ben indicate the danger of the 'public sector bad/private sector good' rhetoric in which much of this kind of discussion here and elsewhere is discussed (but which they have thankfully avoided in their exchanges). The public sector covers a huge range of jobs and levels of service, so cannot be covered by blanket statements. The the kinds of bad service and performance-directed management strategy mentioned by Adam is also found in the private sector (and much of it has been imported into the public sector from the private). Such inefficiencies in the private sector are not cost free to the customer as you pay in other ways, such as time wasted or in other charges and prices. I don't think public sector workers should go on strike over pay as I think we should all recognise the enormous economic crisis we are in and search for appropriate ways moving out of it - which is likely to mean some form of economic constraint for most people. |
