Perhaps because the primary cause of the financial malaise we currently find ourselves is the astronomical risk/reward tactics employed by the private sector. Workers in the public sector (especially those who could quite easily have risen to middle and senior management in the private sector) accept that their salaries will not be comparable to those in banking, law or consultancy etc. In return, they receive relative job security and good pension schemes. However, whilst they accept a pay disparity when the private sector is booming, they should not be expected to receive effective pay cuts (i.e. below inflation or zero rises) when things go bad, through no fault of their own. |
