| You may well be right that he wants it to be a disaster to be proved right, but the evidence is growing by the day about the negative economic impact of leaving the Single Market. You can dispute how material this is, in the face of a growing consensus among economists that it is very significant, but at the same time you have to explain why the cost to us as a nation has been worth it. Is it not the case by putting forward the Windsor Framework to manage trade at our land border with the EU, the British Government has accepted that, in the vast majority of cases, we have become rule takers rather than rule makers, blowing out of the water any notion that our sovereignty has been enhanced? This agreement represented the death of divergence from Single Market rules and there is only one direction for the UK to go now, which is to move back towards integration. How long and what form that takes remains to be seen but the decision has already been made by the current government. |
