| We don't have an immigration crisis we have a demographic crisis which is being solved by immigration. We have never had open borders. Free movement of labour was exactly that - people could come here to work if there was demand. There remains demand for working age people because of our aging population. I suspect the figures we saw this week are a massive understatement of the true level of immigration. The new system post-EU has attempted to limit people coming to do low-paid or seasonal jobs because they are deemed low skilled but this is likely to have forced some of these employers to look to the black economy for workers. Why do you think we had such a sudden influx of Albanians earlier this year? It looks like the government is turning a blind eye because it is so desperate to support economic growth and parts of the agricultural sector would collapse without recourse to this sort of workforce. Part of the reason the small boat problem has increased so much over the last few years is that our black economy is much bigger than it used to be and there is relatively little chance of being sent back because the government tacitly accepts the situation. |
