| I don't think he is spot particularly with regard to Belarus. Lukashenko is gravely ill and substantial parts of his own army, police and security services are profoundly unhappy about the way his partnership with Putin has made their country a pariah state. The democratic opposition, which has majority support in the country, may well be being asked to hold back by the west for fear of a brutal response from Putin should the country attempt realignment. However, Russian military collapse in Ukraine could mean that a shift to the west for Belarus comes quickly. Russia may be different. Huge national resources means that who ever controls them can also impose an autocratic form of government. It seems probable that the country will remain a problem for global stability until the planet weens itself off dependence on fossil fuels. |
