| The initial cost of dealing with small boat arrivals is trivial in the context of overall government spending and ultimately the evidence is overwhelming that successful asylum seekers ultimately make a net positive contribution to the public purse. However, it is wrong and immoral to see this as about pounds and pence - the important thing is understand why there has been a massive surge in the number of people choosing this risky and expensive way of getting into this country over the past few years. The rise has occurred due to government policy. Firstly, safe and legal routes for genuine asylum seekers have been closed off leaving them no other option. Secondly, we have opted out of arrangements with other countries such as the Dublin agreement which previously allowed us to return people arriving on small boats if they didn't have a proper asylum claim. Thirdly, the end of free movement and the imposition of a points based work visa system has meant that there are massive labour shortages in seasonal industries and in certain low skilled jobs. This has resulted in a huge influx only a small proportion are coming by small boat but the absolute numbers are still significant. The Home Secretary is asking for your support in solving a problem that she and her government have created. You are being conned. The solution is self-evident. Come to an arrangement with the French that allows asylum applications to be processed on the other side of the channel and dramatically speed up the applications already in the system. The reason this isn't being done is that it would lead to a one off increase in the net immigration number which is already causing the right wing of the Tory party to have conniptions and Sunak believes he would be ousted if he implemented policies that would actually solve the problem. |
